Your foot has: 26 Bones 33 Joints Over 100 Ligaments Walking = 1 ½ times body weight of force transmitted to the feet Running/Jogging = 3-4 times body weight of force Impact Sports (Basketball, Tennis, Racquetball) = up to 8 time body weight of force

5 Common foot problems that HURT
Bone issues – bunions, hammertoes, fractures Tendonitis/plantar fasciitis Ingrown Toenails Fungal Toenails Complications of Diabetes I often ask at this point if they have heard of any of these things.

Bony bump on the inside of the great toe joint. Causes Genetic, Environment, Shoes? Symptoms Pain from shoes rubbing, because of trouble with fit. Pain at the big toe joint. joint. What is it? Contracted toe either by bone or tendon Causes Genetic, Environment, Poor circulation Symptoms Pain from shoes rubbing, because of trouble with fit. 8 Fractures What is it? Causes Symptoms Solutions A crack in a bone
Injury, accident, strain Symptoms Pain, swelling that doesn’t go away Solutions Casting/boot/splinting Surgery in extreme cases

9 Tendonitis What is it? Strain on specific tendons in foot/ankle Causes

10 Heel Pain – Plantar Fascitiis
What is it? Heel Pain Causes Overuse, poor stretching, injury, age, barefoot, poor shoes Symptoms Pain, especially in morning of after periods of rest Solutions Ice, medicine, injections, stretching Good Shoes – no barefoot Boot to relieve pressure Foot Orthotics Physical Therapy Surgery is last option I usually make a disclaimer that these are not my pictures. 11 Orthotics Medical device that fits into shoes.
Biomechanical control for an unstable foot type. Different types and styles. Custom offers variety of materials and options. Again use your own pictures to promote your practice. It’s a good place to let your audience know that you are the expert in foot orthotics vs. a shoe store.

12 Ingrown Toenails What is it? A nail that is growing against the skin
Causes Poor shoes, picking, genetics, injury Symptoms Pain at sight Possible infection – oozing, blood, swelling Solutions Soaking in epsom salt See Podiatrist for removal – either permanent or not If you have the name of a good medical supply store that would have tools and implements this would be a good place to mention it.

13 Fungal Nails Solutions What is it?
Fungal infection that finds a toenail and spreads easily Causes Close contact with fungal infection Moist conditions Symptoms Thick, hard, discolored nail surface on 1-10 nails Solutions Over the counter products Debridement in office Medication either topical or oral Again, if you are talking more conservative, perhaps you include the names of shoe stores that would carry these types of shoes.

14 Diabetes Diabetes affects many systems in body including circulation.
Neuropathy Callous/hammertoes/wounds Solutions Take care of feet Check for changes daily Keep Diabetes under control with aide from a physician/dietician/physical therapist/podiatrist

15 Shoes Wide toe box. Toes should be able to move side-to-side and top-to-bottom. Protect toes. Be Comfortable Again, names of places or brands that you like are good to mention here. This is also a good place to mention socks.
