STAFF TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT This takes place so that new and existing employees work as effectively as possible TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Staff must cope with changes to their work Training prepares staff for future promotion Ensures all staff have the right skills

The simplest form of staff training and development ON-THE-JOB The simplest form of staff training and development TRAINING The employee is trained by someone who already has the appropriate skills, experience and knowledge Less costly to the organisation Concentrates exclusively on the needs of the business Trainer needs to have good communication skills c “Learning by doing”

Training through specialist organisations OFF-THE-JOB Training through specialist organisations TRAINING Normally more expensive than on-the-job training It is carried out by outside specialists Often leads to new ideas being brought into the business from outside More likely to allow staff to work at their own pace “Can be internal or external”

In terms of efficiency, retail stores can look to improve their utilisation of resources including equipment and staff, in order to cope with an increase in sales.
