Project Planning Integrated Work Plan (IWP) – A plan that identifies the work phase, each activity in the work phase, each task with in each activity and each sub task within each task. An IWP incorporates the safety, quality and efficiency requirements necessary to complete the work injury free, to the specification and to the maximum possible human output. The following strategy is for an entire construction project, however this strategy can be applied to any work process. Keep your mind open to strategic planning components and how this strategy facilitates plan development. January 2006

Project Planning We must get better at planning. Our profession is by nature reactive. We spend the bulk of our time dealing with the past than anticipating the future. It is those things that we do not anticipate that causes confusion. As you know Safety and Quality are the first to be jeopardized in a state of confusion. January 2006

Evaluate how these activities will interact and list the “challenges” associated with Safety, Quality and Efficiency. Look for the same safety, quality and efficiency type activities. Is there an opportunity to consolidate, simplify, or innovate the process. January 2006

Project Planning Assembling the Plan Take the information you have collected and transfer it to the appropriate contract drawing. Make references to the project manuals as required. Zero Injury Manuals Quality Plan Specifications Submittals Project Schedule A plan that is communicated visually is comprehended faster than written text. January 2006

Project Planning Communicating the Plan Forward the plan to ALL subcontractors. Get their feedback and make adjustments as required. Remember MORTENSON IS MANAGING THE PROJECT. Distribute the final plan to all Project Team Members Post the plan in a conspicuous location. Review the plan during all project meetings January 2006

Project Planning Implement and Up-Date the Plan Use the plan to manage the project. Insure subcontractor/suppliers are following the plan. Keep the plan Up Dated. As a project changes the plan must change also. As subcontractors join the project the plan that we present must be accurate. January 2006

Project Planning Evaluate the Plan Continuous evaluation of the plan is required. Are Safety goals being reached? Are Quality expectations being obtained? Is the project on Schedule? Is the project on Budget? What can we do better? January 2006
