Sewa Day – Stem Cell Donation Drive 2018 Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic = BAME

Sewa Day – Stem Cell Kaiya’s Campaign

What is Stem Cell Donation? Bone marrow is a remarkable factory. It's the soft, spongy tissue found at the centre of certain bones in your body where blood What is Bone Marrow Bone marrow is a remarkable factory. It's the soft, spongy tissue found at the centre of certain bones in your body where blood stem cells live. Blood stem cells produce all your essential blood cells, such as red blood cells to carry oxygen and white blood cells to fight infection. Who Needs bone marrow transplants There are some diseases, such as some forms of leukaemia, which stop the factory from working properly. For many such patients, the best hope of a cure is receiving a stem cell transplant. Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic = BAME

Why is Sewa Day Running This Campaign? We urgently need people from black, Asian and other minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds to sign up, as they’re underrepresented on our register. Currently, only 69% of patients can find the best possible match from a stranger, and this drops dramatically to 20% if you're a patient from a BAME background. Only 2% of people in the UK are registered as stem cell donors. This compares to 13% in Cyprus, 12% in Israel and 9% in Germany. Every 20 minutes, someone is diagnosed with blood cancer.

Why is Sewa Day Running This Campaign? 75% of UK patients won’t find a matching donor in their families. So they turn to various agencies to find them an unrelated donor. The donor and the recipient must have the same tissue type. As there are millions of different combinations, finding a suitable match is very complicated. Last year over 300 children who could not find a match within their family. Once you're on the register, you have a 1 in 790 chance of being asked to donate

Antony Nolan? If you wish to join the register, potential donors need to be aged 16-30, weigh at least 50kg (7st 12lb), have a BMI of under 40, must be in excellent general health, be willing to donate to anybody in need of a transplant and to stay on the register until the age of 60. https://www.anthonynolan.org/8-ways-you-could-save- life/donate-your-stem-cells Tel: 0303 303 0303 Why, between 16 and 30 to join the register? Statistics show that young people are more likely to be chosen as donors in lifesaving transplants, and our research has shown that younger donors lead to better survival rates in patients

DKMS? DKMS - If you are between 17 and 55 years old – requires a cheek swab test which you can order from the link below today but is the slowest way (up to 4 weeks for basic results) to know if you are a match and then you would be called in for a blood test: https://www.dkms.org.uk/en/register-now – Tel: 020 8747 5620

NHS Blood and Transplant? NHS - If you are between 17 and 40 years old – requires a simple blood test at any NHS Blood donor centre but you must tell them you wish to join the British Bone Marrow Registry (BBMR) and is a quick way to know if you are a match: https://www.nhsbt.nhs.uk/british-bone-marrow-registry/how- can-i-help/ – Tel: 0300 123 23 23
