This year 130,000 Americans will need a transplant 44,000 Americans (3,500 children) will be diagnosed with Leukemia Leukemia will kill half of the adults and 700 of the children 70% of patients rely on donor registries to find a match 7,500 patients are actively searching the national registry Only 2% of Americans are on the national registry 1,000 people die each year because they cannot find a matching donor

Caucasian patients find a donor 75% of the time Minorities (like African- Americans) only find donors 25% of the time Multi-racial patients almost never find a donor

4 Two Types of Donation PBSC Donation Surgical Donation
Most common, with 80% of donors doing PBSC donations Only 20% of donors have a surgical donation, usually because of a pre-existing medical condition Injection every day for a week to release marrow into the blood Donors are usually admitted to a hospital or clinic overnight Out-Patient procedure on the 7th day of the week, similar to giving blood Procedure is usually done under general anesthesia In either case, the donor usually has symptoms similar to the flu and may feel weak for a few days

5 Chances of Actually Donating
Only 1 in 540 donors are called Of those, 80% donate non-surgically Those who register only have a % chance of donating surgically, and a 0.15% chance of donating through PBSC

Register via bethematch.org Submit a cheek cell sample via mail If called, come to a clinic or hospital for a blood test to verify tissue match
