Using Sound for many purposes
By Ethan Mrs. Mann’s Class Sound is created by vibrations. Vibrations are caused by something moving back and forth. Vibrations are too fast for you.

Sound. Sound Waves Sound is a disturbance that travels through a medium as a longitudinal wave.

Making Sound Waves Sound waves are compressional (longitudinal) Caused by vibrations Are mechanical- can travel ONLY through matter Energy is transferred.
UNIT 1: WAVES Lesson 6 : Reflection of Waves. Reflection - when a wave bounces off of an object  Reflection is what allows you to see an object that.

The Reflection of Sound Waves the reflection of sound is a common occurrence as in water waves, sound waves reflect at the same angle in which they were.
D J agger, D r e w F rench, and D re w Annett The speed of sound is about 330 meters per second. Sound waves require some kind of material to travel.
 Sounds are longitudinal mechanical waves.  They are created by a disturbance and must travel through a medium, usually air, but sound can travel through.

Chapter 16 - Sound  Sound waves are longitudinal waves with rarefaction and compression.  As an object’s vibration moves toward air it creates a compression.

Humans and Other Animals

Hearing Ranges Humans can hear frequencies of sounds between 20Hz to 20,000Hz. Whales, dolphins, bats, and dogs can hear and produce higher frequency sounds than humans.

S.O.N.A.R. A method used by boats to locate objects underwater. A sound is emitted and the sound bounces off of objects and returns to a computer that measures the location of the object.

Echolocation A way of using sound to find objects in the environment Animals generate a sound pulse The sound bounces off of objects creating an echo that returns to the animal. Different objects give off different kinds of echoes. Dolphins and bats use echolocation.
