Utilizing Modeling Instruction & Standards Based Grading Jennifer Griffin & Elizabeth Pate South Central High School Winterville, NC

Today’s Agenda: Introductions Modeling Instruction Demonstrate Modeling Instruction Standards Based Grading Good Morning!. First I like to start off by introducing my colleague and myself. My name is Jennifer Griffin, this is my third year teaching science at South Central High School in Pitt County. This past summer I participated in the Modeling Institute professional development offered by the NC State Science House. This was a three week intensive workshop, where I learned what modeling was and how to incorporate it into my biology science classroom. Elizabeth Pate

What does quality instruction look like? White board moment. Go ahead and take three minutes to discuss with your group what you think quality instruction looks like. Now take two minutes to put your ideas on a whiteboard to be shared with the class. Then takes 2 minutes to share and come to a consensus in this room. Take a look around the room can someone point out any similarities or differences that you want to address. Can you point out a difference in someone else's whiteboard and ask them to elaborate more. Is there anything anyone else wants to add or address at this time? 7 minutes

What is Modeling Instruction? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxqK2l-h8jY We use modeling instruction in our classrooms because we believe it encompasses what we just talked about in the board meeting. Here is a video on our students perspectives about modeling in their classrooms. Examples: Model for motion. Constant velocity roll something down an incline? Revise model 15 minutes

What is the Modeling Cycle? 1. Develop 2. Deploy 3. Revise Develop: Paradigm Lab (All students a share experience from which to draw) (b/c not all students come to use with same experience and prior knowledge) Deploy: apply evidence or model to new situations 2nd: revise the model when necessary *relate back to modeling instruction 4 mins 17 mins

Why use Modeling Instruction? Why do we think modeling insturction is considered quality instruction. Pros: engagement, teaches our students to think critically, ownership, teaches them 21st century skills, teachings them to work together with their peers, justify their claims with evidence. 2-3 mins Definition before vocab

Drawbacks of Modeling Instruction Cons: Time consuming, Students who just want answers or to know the big picture, no ppt notes “so students think they are not learning anything” At the end of every activity we stop to gather the main idea or purpose of the activity (take awY) that they write in their notebooks 2 mins

I don’t teach science, how is Modeling Instruction relevant to me? Yes modeling was developed for science but you can incorportate different aspects of modeling into any curriculum. Such as… White board Multiple representations for example evidence from texts to support answers just as we did when we collect data from labs Notebooking *Use strategies in all classes new generation of critical thinkers

Enough talking, let’s try out this Modeling Instruction you speak of!

Broom Ball Goal: To get each member of your team through course in the least amount of time.

Broom Ball Rules 1. Ball must be swept. 2. Ball may only touch broom. 3. Ball must go through long box without being touched by broom. 4. Ball must be controlled in start and finish box. After game: whiteboard

Questions about Modeling Instruction? End Modeling Instruction 1 hour

What do grades reflect? What should grades reflect? Whiteboard 3 mins

What is Standards Based Grading (SBG)? Mastery

Why use Standards Based Grading? Pros Data collection
