1 Introduction to Modeling Instruction in Biology
Thursday, October 19th 1:15-2:15pm Jennifer Griffin Swansboro High School

2 Agenda *Modeling vs. Traditional *Modeling Cycle *Simulation *Results/Conclusion *Why use Modeling Instruction? *Training *Questions

3 EQ: What does quality instruction look like?

4 Modeling Instruction vs. Traditional
Student Led Evidence Argumentation and Class Discussion Not always one correct answer Differentiation within groups

5 What is the Modeling Cycle?
Develop- Paradigm Lab Deploy- Apply Evidence or Model to NEW situations Develop: Paradigm Lab (All students a share experience from which to draw) (b/c not all students come to use with same experience and prior knowledge) Deploy: apply evidence or model to new situations

6 EQ: What environmental factors cause organisms to become so diverse?

7 Simulation: Thirsty Birds

8 Class Data- Please GRAPH and write a verbal representation on your paper.

9 Why use Modeling Instruction?
Current science teaching practices often emphasize the memorization of facts, yet NGSS emphasizes the primacy of the active constructions by students of conceptual knowledge by “doing science” via science and engineering practices. “Modeling Instruction shifts the paradigm of how science is taught to a pedagogy that is well aligned with NGSS S&E practices. Teachers trained in Modeling Instruction feel better prepared and more likely to succeed in implementing these practices in their classrooms. “ NGSS- Next Generation Science Standards S&E- Science and Engineering

10 10 Skills Employers Say They Seek:
Work in a team Make decisions and solve problems Communicate verbally with people Plan, organize and prioritize work Obtain and process information Analyze quantitative data Technical knowledge related to the job Proficiency with computer software programs Create and/or edit written reports Sell and influence others

11 How do I get trained in Modeling?
NC State University The Science House
