Week #5 Vocabulary

Intensity Measures the amount of damage caused by an earthquake. P-Wave A seismic body wave that is compressional and extensional as it pass through the rock; first to reach the seismograph. S-Wave A seismic body wave that shakes the ground back and forth perpendicular to the direction the wave is moving.

Hot Spot A place deep within the Earth where hot magma rises to just underneath the surface, creating a plume and island arc chain; Ex: Hawaii Pyroclastic Material A hot and quick cloud of ash and lava fragments carried through the air. Aftershock A small earthquake or tremor following the main shock of a large earthquake. Seismic Waves A wave of energy that is generated by an earthquake or other Earth vibration that travels within the earth or along its surface.

Magma Molten rock usually located deep within the mantle of the Earth. Lava Hot molten rock that has erupted from a volcano or crack in the Earth. Alfred Wegener The scientist who proposed the theory of continental drift.
