The End of Italy and Mussolini After Africa, Allies attack Sicily and move into Italy in 1943. Across Italy: factories shut down, Allied bombings, food shortages, Mussolini attempts to escape Resistance fighting would continue until 1945. Mussolini executed and hanged in public square in 1945.

D-Day June 6th, 1944: 2 million troops mobilized to strike on the coast of Normandy, France. Germans knew an attack was coming, but didn’t know where. Bombings, paratroopers, and amphibious assault. Formidable German resistance on the beach, with machine guns and barbed wire. 10,000 Allied troops dead/injured in one day In August 1944 France liberated, over 200,000 Allied forces die

Battle of the Bulge Last major German offensive of the war in December 1944 It ultimately failed. Now Hitler faced a war on two fronts: US and British from West, Soviets from East More Americans dead/injured than any other battle of the war (20,000) Germans lose almost all of their tanks and planes

End of Hitler and the Nazis Allied forces closing in 1945 Hitler hears about Mussolini’s death Soviet troops two blocks away, shots himself in head. His body set on fire in garden. Germany would surrender in May 1945.

End of War in the Pacific Island hoping across Pacific Iwo Jima would be the last major battle in the Pacific, with nearly 110,000 Japanese troops killed in one month. Now it was on to Japan…

The Use of the Atomic Bomb Instead of facing large troop losses, Truman decided to use the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima (Aug. 6), then in Nagasaki (Aug. 9). Over 200,000 civilians killed in the two cities. Surrender would occur on September 2nd.
