2 Battles occur in Italy as the Allies try to liberate Europe by fighting in southern Italy.

3 The Germans are defeated in the USSR by 1942. German troops focus on fighting in Europe.

4 From the west, the Allies plan to liberate Europe in what becomes known as the D-Day invasion or the Normandy Invasion….June 6, 1944.  7,000 ships  13,000 airplanes  1,332,000 soldiers  23,000 paratroopers  Beaches of Normandy, France  Gold, Omaha, Juno, Sword, Utah 120,000 Allies died

6 Island Hopping  Americans fight the Japanese in the Pacific, moving closer to the mainland of Japan.

8 Kamikaze  A desperate attempt by the Japanese to win battles in the Pacific.

11 War Ends in Europe *USSR attacks Germany from the east. *The U.S. attacks Germany from the west. *April 30, 1945, Adolf Hitler commits suicide. *May 7, 1945, Germany surrenders…V-E Day (Victory in Europe).

12 President Harry Truman  President Franklin Roosevelt dies April 12, 1945.  Harry Truman becomes President.  He learns of “the Manhattan Project,” the development of the atomic bomb.  A test bomb is detonated on July 16, 1945 in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

13 Hiroshima and Nagasaki  The Japanese are warned of “prompt and utter destruction” if they did not surrender.  The Japanese do not surrender.  The atomic bomb is dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.  “Little Boy” destroys 63% of the city and killed 80,000-120,000 people instantly.

14 Ending World War II  “Fat Man” is dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945.  35,000 to 74,000 die instantly.  Japan surrenders on August 15, 1945.  V-J Day; Victory over Japan.  World War II ends.

15 Aftermath…  22 German war criminals are prosecuted at the Nuremberg Trials.  Similar trials are held in Tokyo, Japan.  The United Nations is born.  Israel becomes a homeland for the Jews.  Europe needs to rebuild so factories in the U.S flourish.  Germany is divided into East Germany and West Germany.  Japan is “occupied” by Allied forces including the U.S.  The United States and the USSR become superpowers.  The Cold War begins as capitalist countries and communist countries mistrust each other.
