6. Allied Forces on Normandy Beaches
The F00thold - D-Day
On June 6, 1944, Allied forces storm the beaches of Normandy, France.
Canadian troops were assigned to Juno Beach
The Allies gained a foothold on continental Europe and within the next year would slowly push Nazi forces back.

8. Allies Push Back Germans
Allied ground forces advanced on the Germans from the west - Soviets from the east.
Frequent bombing raids, some including as many as 500 – 1000 Allied aircraft, destroyed major cities in Germany.
The German’s retreat after the “Battle of the Bulge.”

9. The Death of Hitler
Surrounded by Soviet troops, Hitler and his wife, Eva Braun, moved to a bunker below the Chancellor’s residence where he and Braun committed suicide (April 30, 1945).
Hitler had first poisoned himself, then shot himself.
His body was immediately burned by his guards.

10. V-E Day (Victory in Europe)
The Allies had slowly pushed the Germans back over 11 months of intense fighting.
On May 7, 1945, Germany unconditionally surrendered.
The war in Europe was finally over.

11. The War in the Pacific
War in Europe may have been over, but Japan still continued to fight in the Pacific.
The Americans had recovered from Pearl Harbour (1941) and begun to invade Japanese held islands in the Pacific.
Americans were now within bombing range of Japan.

12. The Start of the Atomic Age
On August 6, 1945, an American bomber, the Enola Gay, dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima; died.
The Japanese refused to surrender.
Three days later the Americans dropped another atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki; died.

13. V-J Day (Victory in Japan)
On August 14, 1945 Japan surrendered. On September 2, they would officially surrender to American General Douglas MacArthur.
World War Two is officially over!!
The Japanese surrendered on the American Ship Missouri which had been badly damaged at Pearl Harbour.

14. The Aftermath of WW II
World War Two was over, but it had changed the world:
62 million deaths
The Holocaust
Broken lives etc.
Formation of U.N. to help resolve conflicts
“Atomic Age” began
