Figure 1 Dysfunctional Bone Progenitors Cause Hematopoietic Malignancies Mesenchymal stem cells give rise to osteoblastic lineage cells where preosteoblasts express Osterix (Osx) and mature osteoblasts express high levels of Osteocalcin (OCN) and Osx. Deletion of the RNase III enzyme Dicer1specifically in preosteoblasts, but not in mature osteoblasts, resulted in alterations in osteoblast function and bone matrix concomitant with development of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), and myeloid sarcomas.
