The quantity of HSCs increase with age, but the clonal diversity likely decreases with development of myeloid bias. In age-associated clonal hematopoietic diseases such as pre-leukemic conditions of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and myeloproliferative disorders (MPDs), aberrant HSC clones, which have accumulated disease-causing mutations, dominate the HSC population.
