Bush’s administration? Objective: Students will identify the major events that occurred during Pres. George H.W. Bush’s years as President. Standards: RH2, RH4, WHST4 Do Now/Key People: Boris Yeltsin (p.992), Saddam Hussein (p.993). Work Period: History video, “Berlin Wall: Deconstructed”, Graphic Organizer. MAJOR EVENTS DURING THE BUSH YEARS… THE SOVIET UNION COLLAPSES (P.991-992) Eastern Europe abandoned communism. Soviet Union officials (Gorbachev) were arrested & Boris Yeltsin took over as the 1st democratic president. As a result, the Berlin Wall which separated east (communist) & west (democratic) Berlin was torn down and families reunited. TIANANMEN SQUARE (P.992-993) China’s communist leaders wanted to stay in power & not fall apart like the Soviet Union. In a peaceful protest against communism at a college university in Beijing, the Tiananmen Square massacre took place killing many students. PANAMA (P.993) A treaty was signed in 1977 saying that by 2000 the U.S. would leave control of the canal to Panama. It didn’t work because of Panama’s dictator, Manuel Noriega. The U.S. sent troops in, removed Noriega & helped Panama set up a democratic govn’t. THE PERSIAN GULF WAR (P.993) Saddam Hussein invaded the neighboring country of Kuwait despite NATO ordering Hussein to stay out. Hussein refused and this began the Persian Gulf War between the U.S. & Iraq. This war was primarily fought over oil. Pres. Bush liberated Kuwait and it’s people.
