3 ●December 1989: Bush sent 12,000 troops to invade Panama and arrest Panama’s dictator Manuel Noriega for drug trafficking  sentenced to 40 years

5 Persian Gulf War ●August 1990: Iraq invaded Kuwait o Saddam Hussein: ruthless dictator of Iraq  wanted Kuwait’s oil (control 20% of oil produced around the world)  U.S. was afraid Saudi Arabia (controlled even more oil) would fall next

6 ●President Bush organized an international coalition backed by the United Nations o BahrainKuwait Syria o CanadaNetherlands Turkey o Egypt Oman UAE o FrancePakistan UK o GermanyQatar USA o JapanSaudi Arabia

7 ●700,000 troops assembled in Saudi Arabia (Operation Desert Shield) o 500,000 were American troops o Nations like Japan sent money ●Goal: Presence of troops and economic sanctions against Iraq would force Hussein to withdraw from Kuwait

8 ●Operation Desert Storm: American-led attack on Iraqi forces on January 16, 1991. o General Colin Powell helped to devise and execute a strategy beginning with five weeks of aerial bombardment o General Norman Schwarzkopf: commander of coalition’s forces

9 ●Iraqi forces respond with SCUD missiles aimed at Israel (fear of chemical warheads) ●February 23: coalition troops invade Kuwait o Iraqi troops fled, setting fire to oil rigs along the way

10 ●Five days later, cease-fire signed o Iraqi forces: 8,000-10,000 deaths (over 100,000 total) o Coalition forces: 300 deaths (137 U.S.) o Hussein had to get rid of all weapons of mass destruction ●Bush: “We’ve kicked the Vietnam syndrome once and for all.” o Decided not to go after Hussein o Bush’s public approval skyrocketed
