April 10, 2016 Right Now: Finish the T-CAP questions before the timer goes off Agenda: 1- Notes: Chapter 12.1 Objectives: I CAN . . Compare potential and kinetic energy.….Recognize energy can be transformed from one type to another… Distinguish among gravitational potential energy, elastic potential energy, and chemical potential energy.

Potential and Kinetic Energy

In your own words, describe what it means to have energy. Think about it?

Energy and Work In science, energy is the ability to do work. Work is done when a force causes an object to move in the direction of the force. So, work is a transfer of energy.

How is all energy divided? Potential Energy Kinetic Energy Gravitational Potential Energy Elastic Chemical

What is Potential Energy? The energy that an object stores because of the position, shape, or condition of the object. Three kinds of Potential Energy: Gravitational = position Elastic = shape Chemical = condition

What is Gravitational Potential Energy? The energy stored in an object as a result of its vertical position or height. PE = mass x height x gravity An object stores more energy the higher its position

What is Elastic Potential Energy? Potential energy due compression or expansion of an elastic object. Energy is stored in elastic materials as a result of their stretching or compressing Examples are rubber bands, bungee cords, springs, trampolines, bow and arrows. The more stretch, the more stored energy. Notice the ball compressing and expanding https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHV1YbeznCo

What is Chemical Potential Energy? Potential energy stored within the chemical bonds of an object

Chemical Energy Chemical energy is the energy of a compound that changes as its atoms are rearranged. Chemical energy is a form of potential energy because it depends on the position and arrangement of the atoms in a compound. Chemical energy can transform into other types of energy Turn to your neighbor and explain the energy transformation of a battery powered cell phone playing a game. Chemical energy to electrical energy to light energy to sound energy to heat energy

What is Kinetic Energy? Energy an object has due to its motion.

Mechanical energy is the total energy of motion and position of an object. mechanical energy = potential energy + kinetic energy Mechanical Energy

Thermal Energy All matter is made of particles that are always in random motion. Because the particles are in motion, they have kinetic energy. Thermal energy is all of the kinetic energy due to random motion of the particles that make up an object. Particles move faster at higher temperatures than at lower temperatures. The faster the particles move, the greater their kinetic energy and the greater the object's thermal energy. QUICKLY RUB YOUR HANDS TOGETHER TO CREATE THERMAL ENERGY!

Electrical Energy Electrical energy is the energy of moving electrons. Electrons are the negatively charged particles of atoms. Suppose you plug an electrical device into an outlet and turn it on. The electrons in the wires will transfer energy to different parts of the electrical device.

Sound Energy Sound energy is caused by an object's vibrations. When you stretch a guitar string, the string stores potential energy. When you let the string go, this potential energy is turned into kinetic energy, which makes the string vibrate. The string also transmits some of this kinetic energy to the air around it. The air particles also vibrate, and transmit this energy to your ear. When the sound energy reaches your ear, you hear the sound of the guitar.

Light Energy Light allows you to see, but did you know that not all light can be seen? Light energy is produced by the vibrations of electrically charged particles. Like sound vibrations, light vibrations cause energy to be transmitted. But the vibrations that transmit light energy don't need to be carried through matter. In fact, light energy can move through a vacuum (an area where there is no matter).

Nuclear Energy There is a form of energy that comes from a tiny amount of matter. It is used to generate electrical energy, and it gives the sun its energy. It is nuclear energy, the energy that comes from changes in the nucleus of an atom.
