Meeting with Legislators Things to Remember: Schedule Appointments ASAP If the Legislator is unavailable, ask to meet with an aide, these staff members are often VERY influential! Who should you meet with: Local Senate and Assembly Find your local representatives here: http://www.elections.ny.gov/district-map/district-map.html Senators and Assembly Members on committees that we care about including but not limited to Alcohol and Substance Abuse; Education; Insurance; Higher Education; Health and more! Meeting with Legislators Things to Remember: Develop the 45 Second Elevator Pitch: Ask yourself these questions When asked what your organization does, can you explain it quickly and concisely? Can everyone involved communicate your mission, the organization’s value (i.e. Board and members), and your goals/asks This is why it is so important to work together on your message and your elevator pitch—need to make sure all our partners carry the same, agreed upon welcome

Logistics/Discussion Does your region have one appointed leader? What is your goal for getting people to Stand Up For Recovery Day from your region? Does your region have a bus/What is your region’s mode of transportation? How are you communicating and promoting Stand Up For Recovery Day?

Communications Plan Stand Up for Recovery Day is only 8 weeks away! We are counting on your help to make this year’s event even more successful than last year. In 2017, more than 700 people across the recovery community representing every region in this state participated in Stand Up for Recovery Day. This year, our goal is to have 1,000 people show up for this event in Albany to make it clear to lawmakers that the recovery community is strong and addiction impacts families across our state. Communications Plan: Sample Email You are invited to stand with (insert name of your RCO) and FOR-NY during Stand Up for Recovery Day in Albany on March 6th. Register today in order to join with other members of the recovery community as we stand together in Albany to educate our lawmakers about the importance of supporting prevention, treatment, and recovery services in New York. Stand Up for Recovery Day is held at the Empire State Plaza Concourse-Convention Hall in Albany from 8am-3pm on March 6th. (Make sure to include travel information. Is your RCO renting a bus or arranging a car pool to travel together to Albany? What is the meet up time/place for your RCO for this event?) Last year, more than 700 people came together for Stand Up for Recovery Day. This year, our goal is to have more than 1,000 people marching, speaking out, and standing up for the many people in our families and communities who are impacted by addiction.
