Talking About Learning Disability

Living with a Learning Disability

Living with a Learning Disability Lesson 3 Living with a Learning Disability Learning Intentions for Lesson 3: To describe the skills that a person needs to complete everyday tasks. To think about how some everyday tasks can be difficult for a person with a learning disability and consider how this makes them feel.

Participating in a board game Activity 1 Think, Pair, Share What skills do you think would be required to carry out the following?   Reading a text message Counting money Taking part in a group discussion Participating in a board game Playing an X-Box or Playstation Game Getting dressed

Individual note-taking Activity 2 Individual note-taking Ask the teacher for one of the following CASE STUDIES and a copy of the ‘Out and About’ sheet. Thinking of the skills required for the following activities, Why might it be difficult for Jane, John, Stuart or Olivia to:   CS1 Jane CS2 John CS3 Stuart Go out for lunch? Go to the cinema/bowling with a friend? Meet a friend in town? …. write this information down on your ‘out and about sheet’ CS4 Olivia

Activity 3 Are there some tasks which you find difficult and make you feel frustrated? Have a go at the following:

a) Language Task Individual note-taking   Take the Egyptian alphabet letters sheet. Think of a word and copy out your word in Egyptian (hieroglyphics). Pass it to another pupil and see if they can guess the word. How difficult was it to write out the word and recognise words from other pupils?

b) Card Game Work in Groups of 4 Ask one person from your group to stand outside the classroom while you explain the rules to the rest of the group. Take a pack of playing cards and place them in the middle of the table. One person should turn the cards over one by one. As they do so, the rest of the group must: Clap their hands when they see a heart Stand up and sit down when they see a spade Touch their nose when they see a club Shake their head when they see a diamond Once the group is clear about the rules then ask the ‘outsider’ to rejoin your group and invite them to play the game without explaining the instructions. Now ask the person to explain how they felt when they were participating. Make a note of the words they use to describe their feelings and emotions. Before showing this slide ask for 3 or 4 volunteers – ask them to leave the room - Then show this slide to pupils left in class and explain what to do – have a quick trial (pupils sit quietly take one card at a time, look at it, do one of the above actions and return card to table face down) – must do this without speaking. Hide this slide before others return and join in groups – just ask them to join in with their groups – do task for few minutes. When stop ask pupils who were out of room how they felt? (usually confused, not sure what was happening, anxious or stupid) – explain this is how it feels for a lot of people with LD every day when they are in social or group situations. 8

Success Criteria for Lesson 3 I am developing an understanding of what it is like to live with a learning disability.
