Lesson Plan 1 – Day 1

Climate System and Weather

Weather Weather refers to: The state of the atmosphere in a particular place and time. Weather occurs over short time periods. The weather predictions usually cover days or weeks.

Types of Weather What terms do you associate with weather?

What Causes Weather? Weather is an expression of the climate system. The climate system is the interaction of the atmosphere, biosphere, and other parts of the Earth that determine weather at a time or place The Atmosphere The Biosphere The Oceans

Relating Climate and Weather for Johnson City

Why is the Climate System Important? The climate system determines the weather. The weather affects many of our daily decisions. Climate affects long-term decisions by humans. Climate affects long-term trends in plants and animals.

What do you think? The following video talks about weather, climate, and climate change. While watching the video, think about whether the terms weather and climate are used appropriately given the definitions. Click Here for Video Link

Evidence for Climate Change

Review What is the difference between climate and weather? What is one evidence for global warming? What is your opinion about global warming?

Evidence for Climate Change

Seven of these indicators would be expected to increase in a warming world and observations show that they are increasing. Three would be expected to decrease and they are decreasing.

Vocabulary Climate Weather CO2 Trend Evidence for Global Warming Greenhouse effect Fossil fuel

New Vocabulary Köppen classification system Tropical climates are characterized by constant high temperature (at sea level and low elevations) all twelve months of the year have average temperatures of 18°C (64 °F) or higher. Tropical climates

New Vocabulary Köppen classification system Dry (arid and semiarid) climates[edit]edit These climates are characterized by the fact that actual precipitation is less than a threshold value.

New Vocabulary Mild Temperate/mesothermal climates These climates have an average temperature above 10 °C (50 °F) in their warmest months (April to September in northern hemisphere), and a coldest month average between 3 and 18 °C (27 and 64 °F). Mild Temperate Climate

New Vocabulary Mild Polar climates These climates are characterized by average temperatures below 10 °C (50 °F) in all twelve months of the year

Debate Prepared Eye contact Voice: loud, clear, easy to hear Posture Attentive and active participant during entire debate Good use of time, stayed within the time limits Debated the topics not the other team (kept it professional) Worked well with team…did his/her share of work

Debate 1. Organization & Clarity Main arguments and responses are outlined in a clear and orderly way. Enhanced with visuals. 2. Opening Statement Explained /defined side 3. Affirmative Statements: demonstrated knowledge of subject supported by research 4. Negative Rebuttals: Made specific arguments about the weak points of the opposing team 5. Affirmative Rebuttals: The team defended itself from attack by using additional facts to support claim 6. Closing Statement: Summarized the main points of the debate
