CALCULATING A GRADE POINT AVERAGE Department of Student and Academic Administration

How to calculate a Grade Point Average (GPA) The University work out your GPA as follows: “a weighted mean of Grade Points from all relevant credits at Levels 5 and 6, in the ratio of 40:60 respectively, after first discounting the Grade Points in the worst 20 credits at each level.” The following is an example of how it is calculated.

Grade Classification Each overall module mark is assigned a grade as detailed below:

Things to note Pass/Fail modules are not included. The level refers to the level of the module not the level of the course. Even though 20 credits are discounted you still need to pass them. The lowest 20 credits are discarded regardless of module credit values. It is the worst 20 credits. An example of this is given in Level 6.

Calculating Level 5 GPA First we need to assign grades to the modules at Level 5. We will use the following marks for this example: Level 5 Credits Mark Module 1 20 55 Module 2 20 60 Module 3 20 65 Module 4 20 68 Module 5 20 45 Module 6 20 60

Convert to Grade Points The Grade Points (GP) for each module is worked out by taking the value from the table shown on the earlier slide labelled Grade Classification as follows: Level 5 Credits Mark GP Module 1 20 55 2.75 Module 2 20 60 3 Module 3 20 65 3.5 Module 4 20 68 3.75 Module 5 20 45 2 Module 6 20 60 3

Working out the Level 5 GPA We look at the worst 20 credits – in this case it is Module 5. This is discounted. Then we calculate the weighted average grade points of the of the other modules: (2.75x20)+(3x20)+(3.5x20)+(3.75x20)+(2x20)=320 We divide this by the number of credits we are considering – 100 – to give a GPA of 3.2.

Calculating Level 6 GPA Next we need to calculate the weighted grade point average at Level 6. We will use the following marks: Level 6 Credits Mark Module 1 60 56 Module 2 20 76 Module 3 20 85 Module 4 20 76

Convert to GP The Grade Points (GP) are as follows: Level 6 Credits Mark GP Module 1 60 56 2.75 Module 2 20 76 4.25 Module 3 20 85 4.25 Module 4 20 76 4.25

Working Out the Level 6 GPA We look at the worst 20 credits – in this case it is Module 1 but that is 60 credits. So in this case we discount 20 credits of Module 1. So the Level 6 GPA is: (2.75x40)+(4.75x20)+(4.75x20)+(4.75x20)=365 We divide this by the number of credits we are considering - 100 again - to get 3.65 as the Level 6 GPA.

Calculating overall GPA So now we have the Level 5 and Level 6 averages as 3.2 and 3.65 respectively. The GPA weights these at 40% at Level 5 and 60% at Level 6. So: (3.2x0.4)+(3.65x0.6)=3.47 This produces a GPA of 3.47. This mark is shown rounded to 2 decimal places.
