1 Final Grade Averages Weighted Averages

2 Weighted Averages When a weighted average is applied to a set of numbers, more importance (weight) is placed on some components of the set. Your final average in this class is probably an example of a weighted average.

3 Final Grade Averages Exams 40% Quiz 30% Assignments 20%
Percentage Given Grade Earned Exams 40% Quiz 30% Assignments 20% 9 Weeks Exam 10% Exams 84 Quiz 66 Assignments 88 9 Weeks Exam 78

4 Procedures to get final grade average:
84 x .4 = 33.6 66 x .3 = 19.8 88 x .2 = 17.6 78 x .1 = 7.8 First multiply the average grade by the weighted percentage. Percentage must be changed to decimal. Then add the results to get the final grade. Final Grade: = 78.8

5 What if not all of the grades are averaged?
Exam Grades: 82, 76, 66, 88 Quiz 66 Assignments 88 9 Weeks Exam 78 In this case exam grades. Average the exam grades first. = / 4 = x .40 = 31.2 Quiz 66 x .30 = 19.8 Assignments 88 x .20 = 17.6 9 Weeks Exam 78 x .10 = 7.8 Final Grade: = 76.4

6 Your averages and values are the following:
Exam average = 87 Quiz average = 92 Assignments = 95 What grade do you need on the final exam to earn a final grade average of at least 90 to make an A? 87 • .4 = 34.8 92 • .3 = 27.6 95 • .2 = 19 = 81.4 x (.10) = 90 x (.10) = x = 86
