WHMIS Stands for: Used in all schools and workplaces in Canada Workplace Hazardous Material Information System Used in all schools and workplaces in Canada Uses labels and information sheets to alert you to hazardous materials.

WHMIS Symbols You’ve probably seen these before: Home Hazardous Product Labels (HHPS) Corrosive - Contents Explosive - Contents Flammable - Contents Poison - Contents Explosive - Container

WHMIS Symbols WHMIS Symbols are always bordered by a That means it’s a WHMIS symbol. Within the border will be basic handing information.

WHMIS SYMBOLS Toxic (Long term effects) Could cause death, sterility, birth defects and disease after repeated exposure.

WHMIS SYMBOLS Compressed Gas Contents are under pressure and may cause injury if released quickly.

WHMIS SYMBOLS Flammable and Combustible May ignite when exposed to flame.

WHMIS SYMBOLS Corrosive May react with and damage metal and living tissue. Causes damage to the lungs, skin, and eyes.

WHMIS SYMBOLS Toxic (immediate and severe) May cause death if consumed, inhaled, or absorbed through skin.

WHMIS SYMBOLS Biohazard May cause anaphylaxis or cause infection in humans.

WHMIS SYMBOLS Dangerously Reactive May have an unexpected reaction, use extreme caution.

WHMIS SYMBOLS Oxidizing material May burn skin and eyes May cause combustibles to suddenly react.

MSDS Material Safety Data Sheets Contain additional information about the chemicals you are using. They are stored with the Chemicals but are accessible if you need them.

Lab Rules In order to stay safe in the lab you’ll need to always be following the LAB RULES. These apply at all times while labs are being conducted.

Lab Rules 1. Always wear appropriate safety equipment When conducting a lab you must always be wearing goggles, even when you are recording results, as long as chemicals are being handled in the classroom. Long hair must be tied back when using an open flame. No open toed shoes.

Lab Rules 2. No eating or drinking in the lab. This rule is in effect at all times, even when labs are not being conducted. The surfaces in the lab may not be entirely clean and food could become contaminated.

Lab rules 3. No unauthorized experiments Follow the directions!

Lab Rules 4. Never taste or smell anything. If you are instructed to smell something hold it away from your face and waft towards your nose.

Lab Rules 5. Wash your hands after handling chemicals

Lab Rules 6. Know where the safety and first aid equipment is located. Don’t be a hero. Leave firefighting to the professionals.

Lab Rules 7. Notify the teacher immediately if there is an accident.

Lab Rules 8. Never dump chemicals down the sink. There will be a designated container for chemicals unless you are specifically told to dump them down the sink.

Lab Rules 9. If you spill it clean it up. Carefully clean up glass with a broom and pan and place it in the broken glass bin. Carefully clean up and dispose of chemicals spilled. Ask for help to know where to put them.

Lab Rules 10. Use common sense and act responsibly. It’s dangerous in the lab, respect others and the equipment at all times. Failure to do so will mean that you won’t be joining us. Have fun but be cautious
