How can the same idea be presented in different ways? Flip Slips Practice STEPS TO Skill or Problem How can the same idea be presented in different ways? STEP PREP Procedures Skill Language & Vocab Breakdown Prior Knowledge Textual Evidence Anticipation (1 Practice Problem Before Procedures )

Skill Focus The skill for this week is...... Compare and contrast a written story, drama, or poem to its audio, filmed, staged, or multimedia version, analyzing the effects of techniques unique to each medium (e.g., lighting, sound, color, or camera focus and angles in a film). Analyze the extent to which a filmed or live production of a story or drama stays faithful to or departs from the text or script, evaluating the choices made by the directors or actors.

Skill Focus In other words, Be able to analyze how a topic is treated in various productions of the original text.

Vocabulary Copy the following words: Analyze Compare Contrast Medium Techniques Version

Vocabulary Strategy: Word Analysis Under “My Definition,” write the definition for each word. Next, use the word in a sentence. Below “My Definition” under “Synonym” write two words that are similar to the vocabulary word. Finally, under “Antonym” write two words that are opposite.

Analyze: breaking down information with supporting evidence. Vocabulary Analyze: breaking down information with supporting evidence. Compare: to examine in order to discover likenesses. Compare: to examine in order to discover differences. Medium: a means by which something is communicated or expressed.

Vocabulary Techniques: the execution or performance of an artistic work (setting, lighting, pictures, charts). Version: a particular form of something differing in certain respects from an earlier form or other forms of the same type of thing.

Prior Knowledge How is reading a play different from seeing it performed? Have you ever seen a remake of a movie? How was it different from the earlier version? How can a text and a live performance cover the same topic?

Anticipatory Set Read the poem provided, then listen to the audio version. Compare and contrast the techniques used to convey the topic.

Anticipatory Set “Still I Rise” Maya Angelou You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may tread me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise.

Anticipatory Set Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? 'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I'll rise.

Anticipatory Set Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops. Weakened by my soulful cries. Does my haughtiness offend you? Don't you take it awful hard 'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines Diggin' in my own back yard.

Anticipatory Set You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I'll rise. Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise That I dance like I've got diamonds At the meeting of my thighs?

Anticipatory Set Out of the huts of history's shame I rise Up from a past that's rooted in pain I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide, Welling and swelling I bear in the tide. Leaving behind nights of terror and fear

Anticipatory Set Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear I rise Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise.
