Why is the narrator comparing herself to them? 4.Why would someone want to see the narrator “broken”? 5.Who might be offended or annoyed by this narrator’s attitude? 6.What does the narrator mean by “history’s shame” and “a past that’s rooted in pain”? 7.What is the narrator saying about her future?

14. Part 3: Exit Ticket (10 mins) Now that you have analyzed the poem, SYNTHESIZE the information to determine the OVERALL MEANING of “Still I Rise”—what is Maya Angelou’s message? How does the repetition of “I rise” influence the meaning? Make sure you use EVIDENCE (lines and examples) from the poem to prove your analysis is correct!
