1 Introduction to Poetry
AP Literature Style

2 Section 1 Notebook- LG Students will be able to analyze the meaning and tone of a poem and support their assertions with discussion of a variety of the poetic elements’ effects on the meaning and tone.

3 Scale: Where are you now?
4- If poetry be the food of life, then my soul is full. I not only can identify and explain the effects of poetic techniques, I can also connect them to meaning and tone in language that shows knowledge of poetry. 3- I can express in words what my mind sees in pictures. I can identify and explain some effects of poetic language and connect them to the meaning or tone, but perhaps not both, and perhaps using less-specific language. 2- What is this poetry? I am still learning the alphabet. I can identify poetic techniques but I don’t know why they are in the poems and I don’t understand how they work. I can, however, paraphrase the meaning and put it into my own terms. 1- Poetry, I know not of you. I am seriously lost when it comes to poetry. From meaning to technique, even tone, I never feel like I get it. 0- Only the very weak-minded refuse to be influenced by literature and poetry

4 Brainstorm- What do you know?
When I say “poetic devices”- what comes to mind?
