Mass Questions #21-23 21. Mass is the measure of the amount of matter in an object. 22. Kilogram is the SI Basic Unit for mass. Gram is the METRIC Base unit for mass. Weight is the measure of the force of GRAVITY on an object. Weight would change if you went to the moon (the moon has 1/6 the gravity of Earth), but your mass would stay the same!

Mass Question #24- Steps to use a Balance Place the balance on a flat/level surface. Make sure all riders are moved to ZERO. Make sure the balance is calibrated (the lines match up). Place the object on the pan and allow it to settle. Move the LARGEST rider first. Stop when the lever hits the bottom and move the rider back ONE notch. Repeat step 6 with all riders, going from largest to smallest. Your goal is to move the riders until the two lines match up. Add up all of the positions where you put the riders to find the mass of the object in the pan. Remember to guess one decimal place and DON’T FORGET UNITS!!

How to tell what a penny is made of: Look at the year. If it was minted from 1864 to 1982, then it is 95% copper. If it was minted after 1982, then it is 97.5% zinc. Older 1982 pennies are 95% copper, while newer 1982 pennies are 97.5% zinc. Be aware that some 1983 pennies are 95% copper. Drop the penny on a hard surface. If the dropping sound is loud, the penny is 95% copper. Otherwise, the penny is 97.5% zinc. If the sound has a high pitched ring, it is mostly copper. Measure the penny. Use a scale like the ones used for measuring gold to measure the penny. If it is 2.5 grams, then the penny is 97.5% zinc. If the penny is 3.1 or 3.2 grams, then the penny is 95% copper.
