Global Studies Magnet Program What is Global Studies? The Global Studies Magnet Program at Varela Senior High School provides a rigourous educational program dealing with major issues confronting today’s globalized world and the principle historical issues that have lead to globalization. The Global Studies Pogram includes the study of nations, ethnicities/cultures, world religions, international relations, historical perspectives, diplomacy, as well as the analysis of the major problems facing the world today. Global Studies… How does this program prepare a student for success in college? 1 All Global Studies Courses are taught at high levels of rigor. Education experts indicate that the single most important factor in determing college success is the level of instructional rigor they received during high school. 2 Each year Global Studies’ students will be offered electives that are at Honors and Advanced Placement Levels, reinforcing a rigorous curriculum. 3 Core classes (Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science) will also be offered at Honors and Advanced Placement levels. 4 Global Studies gives students problem solving skills and the knowledge base necessary to understand the forces shaping our world today and to contribute to building a better future for us all. – Universities want this type of student! University Acceptance Global Studies What to Expect from the Global Studies Program at Varela Senior High School Rigorous Instruction College Resumè University Acceptance Global Studies instructors will implement a rigorous curriculum that focuses on enhancing a students critical thinking and problem solving skills. Global Studies students will study the major challenges facing the international community today. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities National Honors Society, Student Government, Best Buddies Club, etc. Universities value students that participate, in a meaningful way, in etxra-curricular activities..
