Universal Design for Learning (UDL) What is it? Simply put, UDL is the practice of embedding flexible strategies into curriculum during the planning process so that all students can access a variety of learning solutions. So What is universal design for learning? [Read definition] Universal design for learning (UDL) anticipates the needs of diverse learners.

The 3 premises of UDL Learning differs across tasks Learning differs across development Learning differs across individuals Universal design for learning (UDL) is a framework for removing barriers by anticipating the needs of all students As with Universal design in modern architecture, universal design for learning builds in access to the curriculum from the start.

Principle 1: Provide Multiple Means of Representation *Perception *Language, Expression, Symbols *Comprehension The “What” of Learning Engaging students is critical for learning. The following screen shots show examples of ways to use technology to connect teaching and learning in engaging ways. Present information and content in different ways.

Principle 1 - Representation Learners differ in the ways that they perceive and comprehend information that is presented to them. How will you teach the content? How will students learn the content independently?

Principle 1: Representation Voki - text to speech generator that allows the user to create a personal speaking avatar that can be embedded in a website. Wordle - a toy for generating 'word clouds' from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text.

Principle 2: Provide Multiple Means of Action & Expression *Physical Action *Expression & Communication *Executive Function The “How” of Learning In this segment, you will see examples of flexible ways of presenting curriculum content. Teachers need flexible ways of presenting information and students need varying ways of receiving information. Some students may prefer multisensory lessons, while others may process information through one dominant sensory channel. Differentiate the ways that students can express what they know.

Principle 2 – Action & Expression Learners differ in the ways that they can navigate a learning environment and express what they know. How will students show you what they know? How do you differentiate the ways that students can express what they know?

Principle 2: Action & Expression ToonDoo is a website that allows users to generate their own comic strips. You can create your own characters or upload your own images. ToonDoo also offers excellent community features such as voting, commenting, and sharing. "Use Webspiration to map out ideas, organize with outlines and collaborate online with teams or colleagues."

Principle 3: Provide Multiple Means of Engagement *Recruiting Interest *Sustaining Effort & Persistence Self-regulation The “Why” of Learning In this segment, you will see examples of flexible methods of expression and assessment so that students have varied ways to demonstrate what they have learned. Stimulate interest and motivation for learning.

Principle 3 - Engagement Affect represents a crucial element to learning, and learners differ markedly in the ways in which they can be engaged or motivated to learn. How will students be engaged in the content? How do you stimulate interest and motivation for learning?

Principle 3: Engagement RubiStar is a tool to help the teacher who wants to use rubrics, but does not have the time to develop them from scratch. Glogster allows you to create "interactive posters" to communicate ideas. Students can embedded media links, sound, and video, and then share their posters with friends.
