Juvenile Justice Center 1200 Congress Fire Evacuation Procedures

Purpose Of Training The purpose of this training is to educate and inform you of the features of your building which are designed to protect you in the event of a fire. Some of these features require the occupants’ assistance, in order to insure that they will function as designed.

They are not to be used as storage areas. Caution! Stairwells are exits!! They are not to be used as storage areas.

Caution! This is an outlet for the stairwell pressurization system. This building is equipped with a system that blows air into the stairwell in order to keep smoke out. When the stairwell pressurization system is engaged, the doors to the stairwells will be a little bit harder to open.

Fire Control Room Located on the first floor is the fire control room which houses the: Elevator Controls Firefighter Control Panel PA System, which in the event of an emergency, will notify you to prepare to evacuate and will also give you the order to evacuate.

Fire Alarm System Located throughout the building are : Sirens, Strobe lights, Smoke Detectors, Sprinklers, and Pull Stations Familiarize yourself with this equipment, and learn their general location near your workspace.

Fire Extinguishers Fire extinguishers are placed throughout the building. They are to be used on very small fires, and only after notification. The fire extinguishers are not locked, as the sticker on the side states. In the event of an emergency, the doors must be forcefully opened.

In Case Of A Fire Notify Co-Workers Call 911 Call Harris County Central Station @ (713)755-7700

Notification When contacting 911 and Central Station, the following information should be given: The nature of the emergency The address of where you are calling from The floor and room number you are calling from The telephone number you are calling from Allow the 911 operator to hang up first

If An Alarm Is Not Sounding If an alarm is not sounding, locate the nearest fire alarm pull and follow the directions located on the device, as the photograph shows.

How Do I Exit My Building? Close the door when exiting. Closing the door can deny oxygen to the fire and buy those exiting some extra time to evacuate, or be rescued by fire personnel.

How Do I Exit My Building? There is an array of exit signs which will lead you to the stairs, corridors, etc., which you need to use in order to exit the building.

How Do I Exit My Building? Make sure that you stay with your Fire Warden. It is the duty of the Fire Wardens to report unaccounted people to the fire department.

How Do I Exit My Building? While Exiting: Follow the direction of the arrows until you are able to exit the building.

If You Need Assistance If you are unable to evacuate, wait here. Stairwells are two hour fire rated enclosures, and are smoke resistant. Someone should remain with the person(s) in need of assistance, and the fire warden should insure that the fire department is notified of their location. Note: Occupants should not attempt to carry someone who is unable to evacuate down the stairs.

What Can Be Done in Preparation? Know your building. Be aware of your evacuation route. Have a plan in place for evacuation. Practice. Do not wait for a problem to arise. Think Proactively!!

PLANNING IS IMPORTANT! KNOW WHERE ALL STAIRWELLS ARE LOCATED NOTHING SHOULD BE STORED IN A STAIRWELL 911 AND 5-7700 KNOW LOCATION OF THE PULL STATIONS IN YOUR AREA PLAN TO LIVE
