Recycling October 17th, 2014 Point Fortin Secondary School Mrs. J. Sookraj- Kalicharan

What is recycling? This is the process of collecting materials from waste, separating them by type, remaking them into new products and marketing and reusing the material as new products.

Advantages of recycling Resources will not be used up as quickly. Less land is needed for disposal of waste. Less pollution of soil and water occurs as waste decomposes. Less toxic waste is generated. Harm to animals is prevented. In some cases, less energy is used to recycle than to make a new product.

Difficulties of recycling Time consuming to collect recyclables. Each household must sort and place their waste into suitable bins. Recycling bins must be placed at strategic locations. People must be educated on the importance of recycling. Cost of storage and transport of recyclables.

The 3Rs Reduce Reuse Recycle

Reduce- the accumulation of manufactured materials We can do this by buying what we need and choosing products that are not over packaged. E.g. bulk products Avoid disposable products. Avoid the use of products that are harmful to the environment. Reduce the use of water and electricity.

Reuse- multiple uses of a product that you already own Starting a compost heap with kitchen & yard waste to be used as a natural fertilizer. Save and reuse things like string, gift- paper, grocery bags, jars and bottles. Donate magazines and books to friends, libraries or doctors’ offices.

Reuse Donate old clothes and furniture. Donate egg cartons, toilet paper rolls, yogurt containers to pre- schools for craft. Repair broken toys, appliances, furniture instead of buying new ones.

Recycle-collection &remanufacture into new products Plastics Glass Paper Aluminium cans Iron Gold Tin

Assessment Design a recycling programme that you think may work in your school. E.g. soft drinks bottles can be collected and recycled. Work in groups Create a flyer to show how your programme will work Present it to your class/ submit to your teacher
