Open Discussion

What about these…. “I lived at West Egg, the-well, the less fashionable of the two, though this is a most superficial tag to express the bizarre and not a little sinister contrast between them” Tom and Daisy’s house was owned by an “oil man”. Oil being the oldest resource of them all. “’Oh, I’ll stay in the East, don’t you worry…I’d be a God damned fool to live anywhere else.’” “I’m glad it’s a girl. And I hope she’ll be a fool- that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.”

East is progressive East is the center of development and rapid change. East is cynical. West is wholesome with traditional values and lacking cynicism.

East vs. West

Color Wheel Which colors can be associated with East Egg? West Egg? Valley of Ashes? Color can often times set the tone. The colors used in Gatsby are not just setting, but also give us details of character, attitude and society. Nick uses these colors as a way to judge.

Two Gatsby’s Wistful Gatsby:

Two Gatsby’s Decadent/ Gritty Gatsby:

Color Association White Gold/Yellow Green Light Grey Blue

Our Characters Is Nick a reliable narrator? What does he want out of life? Why is he in New York? How is he similar to the other characters?

The Eyes!!!

Found Poetry Tell me what is important and poetic about the colors? Find the quotations which use color to the max! Make sure to find a variety! Once you’ve FOUND these quotations determine the order in which you would like to put them in your poem. Should you start with White and then Descend to Grey? Should you Contrast the Green and the Gold and go back and forth? Tell me what is important and poetic about the colors? What is the relationship between the colors? Do the colors change? (predict)

Found Poetry http://www.laurasalas.com/pdfs/Poetic%20Pursuits/pp0811.pdf

Color Transitions You could start with GREEN= American Dream Fade into YELLOW= the money which many people feel is the only way to the American Dream. Then shift into WHITE to contrast money with purity and innocence, which is ultimately lacking in our story. Then moving to GREY……Death, hopelessness

Found Poetry assessment 1 2 3 4 5 Selection of “Colorful Quotations” There are very few quotation selections which only address 1-2 colors. The quotations selected are long and unruly and do not address all of the colors. The quotations selected address the primary colors found in Great Gatsby. All colors are addressed by the quotations chosen. Each quotation selected addresses the power of the colors in Gatsby. Thoughtful order of the selections from text. The few colors addressed are haphazardly ordered and create no lasting message. The colors selected attempt to create meaning, but it is rather literal. The poem conveys the message of the primary colors of Gatsby, but do not relate to each other. The poem attempts to relate the colors to each other. The poem conveys a strong message, which relates all the colors to each other. Structure of the poem itself. There is no structure to the poem. There is little evidence of the poet’s intent to transform the quotations from the text. The poet’s attempt to structure the poem is awkward and gets in the way of the message of the poem. The poet has made clear choices as to the management of the quotations selected. The structure of the poem is very creative and makes Fitzgerald’s words into their own.
