Natural Sciences Grade 7 Term 3: Energy and Change The national electricity supply system

Topic 6 The national electricity supply system Conserving energy in the house Natural Sciences - Grade 7

Natural Sciences - Grade 7 Saving energy at home Use energy saving bulbs [e.g. replace incandescent bulbs with energy saving bulbs]. The pot’s size must be the same as the plate’s size when cooking. Fit foam installations in gaps of doors and windows to prevent draughts. Wear warm clothing, instead of switching on an electric blanket / heater. Lights and appliances that are not in use, must be turned off. Fit insulation above the home’s ceiling. Do not leave computer / televisions on standby, switch it off. Natural Sciences - Grade 7

Saving energy at home [2] Appliances that are being used, should be energy efficient. Washing machines must be set for short cycles and use cold water. Where possible, choose solar power. Do not fill kettles, only boil enough water that you will need. Do not use faulty appliances, because it wastes energy. Geysers can be covered with geyser blankets to reduce loss of heat. Where possible, do not tumble dry clothes, hang it outside to dry. Shower instead of bath. Natural Sciences - Grade 7

CAREERS IN ELECTRICITY GENERATION There are many possible careers in the field of electricity generation. Examples: - Engineers [mechanical and electrical] – They design power stations and the electricity grid. - Artisans and technicians build and maintain the power generators. - Research scientists – They test and develop new technologies to improve power generation.
