Where is the Water Found on Earth?
The Structure of Hydrosphere
 Water on Earth is naturally recycled through the water cycle.  The sun is the source of energy that drives the water cycle.
THE WATER CYCLE Water moves from the oceans to the atmosphere, from the atmosphere to the land, and from the land back to the oceans.

The Earth’s Water Sources of Water

-75 % of the Earth’s surface is covered in water. -Most of all Earth’s ice is polar ice caps and glaciers.

Icecaps Sheets of ice that cover parts of the North and South Pole Areas.

Fresh Water Water that does not have salt content. Includes lakes, rivers, streams, swamps, ponds and marshes

River Slowly moving body of water

Lake Medium size body of water fed by streams

Pond Small body of fresh water, with many plants around it.

Marsh Small body of fresh water with plants growing out of it.

Swamp Small body of fresh water with plants and wildlife living in and around it.

Groundwater Less than 1 % of the Earth’s water is underground. This provides a fresh water source.

Salt Water Holds a lot of dissolved salts ¾ or 75 % of the Earth’s water Temperature varies from place to place

Reservoir Surface water held back by a dam.

Current Wind blows over the ocean’s surface and pushes against the water 3 Things Effect the Current: 1. Wind speed 2. Distance the wind blows 3. Length of time the wind blows

Wave The energy that comes from wind on the ocean’s surface
