1 Water Systems The Water Cycle

2 Three States of Water Solid Liquid Gas

3 Glacial Ice -Masses of thick ice in motion
Solids Glacial Ice -Masses of thick ice in motion Alpine Glaciers -form at high elevations where temperature is below freezing year round Piedmont Glaciers -form at the foot of mountains in cold climates Continental Glaciers -form in extremely cold climates -”ice sheets” can range in thickness from 2500m to 3000 m

4 Liquids Water Above Earth’s Surface
Clouds – collections of tiny water droplets suspended in the atmosphere Water Below Earth’s Surface Groundwater – water seeps until it hits impermeable layer. Where it collects it forms an aquifer; water on top is called water table (Aquifer – a layer of rock that holds water) Water on the Earth’s Surface Creeks, Streams, Rivers Lakes Oceans

5 Aquifer

6 Gas Evaporation – the process by which liquid water becomes water vapour Water evaporates from plants, animals, the land and bodies of water Vapour provides moisture and is recycled back to earth as precipitation (fresh water) Factors that affect rate of evaporation: Temperature Wind speed Relative humidity (amount of water in air)

7 All of the various water systems can be classified into two types of water:
Salt Water Oceans Seas Fresh Water Rivers Lakes Glaciers Polar Ice-caps Rain Groundwater

8 Water in Our World

9 Your Task – The Water Cycle
Using Nelson Text pages , read and make notes on the water cycle. Complete the ‘Check Your Learning’ questions from page 273. Draw a diagram of the Water Cycle.
