Microorganism standard S5L4: Students will relate how microorganisms benefit or harm larger organisms. a. Identify beneficial microorganisms and explain why they are beneficial. b. Identify harmful microorganisms and explain why they are harmful.

What are Microorganisms? Microorganisms are living things too small to be seen with just our eyes.

How do we see microorganisms? Microorganisms are seen by the use of a microscope. A microscope is an instrument that produces an enlarged image of an object.

What Are beneficial microorganisms? Beneficial microorganisms are microorganisms that are helpful.

What are some examples of Beneficial Microorganisms? Bacteria in yogurt Yeast in bread Microorganisms used to make vaccines Microorganisms that decompose Bacteria in our digestive system

What is a Decomposer? A decomposer is an organism that breaks down dead material into simpler substances.

What are antibiotics? Antibiotics are drugs that are used in medicine to kill or slow the growth of germs that cause disease.

What are Harmful microorganisms? Harmful microorganisms are microorganisms that can hurt you.

What are some examples of Harmful microorganisms? Viruses that causes measles and chicken pox Bacteria that causes food poisoning Parasites that cause malaria

How many types of microorganisms are there? There are 5 different types of microorganisms. There can be both beneficial and harmful in each group. Fungi Bacteria Algae Protozoa Viruses

Fungi Fungi are not plants or animals. They can not make their own food like plants and they can’t move to capture their food. They have to live off of another organism.

Bacteria Bacteria are single celled organisms without a nucleus. There are three different shapes. Round (coccus) Rod (bacillus) Spiral (spirillum)

Algae Algae can be single celled or multi-celled, and they can make their own food.

Protozoa Protozoa are single celled organisms with a nucleus. Some examples are: Amoeba Paramecium Euglena

Viruses Viruses are the smallest type of microbe that causes a large number of diseases in plants, animals, and humans.

3-2-1 Response 3 things I learned from the experiment. 2 things I found interesting and would like to learn more about. 1 question I still have about what we did today.

DOK What would happen to an ocean ecosystem if the algae disappeared? (minimum 3 sentences)
