Section 16-3 Electricity from Magnetism Notes

Faraday’s Experiment Faraday conducted an experiment trying to get the magnetic field of the electromagnet to make an electric current in a second wire.

Success for an Instant Faraday realized that electric current in the second wire was made only when the magnetic field was changing. Electromagnetic induction- the process of creating a current in a circuit by changing a magnetic field

Electric Generators Electric generator- uses electromagnetic induction to change mechanical energy into electrical energy When the electric current changes direction, it is an alternating current. A nuclear reaction, fossils fuels, and wind are sources of energy that are used to generate electrical energy.

Transformers Transformer- increases or decreases the voltage of alternating current A step-up transformer increases voltage and decreases current. A step-down transformer decreases voltage and increases current. The electric current that brings electrical energy to your home is usually transformed three times.
