DAILY QUESTION April 8, 2009 1. State Faraday’s law.

WARNING!!!  This Chapter will have an open note test… Get those pencils ready!

FORMAT OF NOTE PACKETS  Define the section vocabulary  Section Notes  Quiz over the section (write out the questions and the answers)  Section Review Questions (write out the questions and the answers)

Agenda4/8/09  Daily Question  Define Ch 17 Section 3 Vocabulary  Ch 17 Sect 3 Notes  Brain Pop – “Electromagnetic induction”  Quiz over Section 3 Assignments: 1. Page 582 #1-3

Electromagnetic Induction  The process of creating a current in a circuit by changing a magnetic field  Faraday’s Law An electric current can be produced in a circuit by a changing magnetic field

Electric charges experience a magnetic force when in a magnetic field  The force is at its maximum when the charge moves perpendicular to the field As the angle between the charge’s direction and the direction of the magnetic field decreases, the force on the charge decreases

Generators  Convert mechanical energy to electrical energy Alternating current generators produce a current that reverses direction  Produce the electrical energy used in homes from a variety of sources: Running water Coal Wind Nuclear fission Geothermal Solar

Tranformers  A device that increases or decreases the voltage of alternating current Step-up transformers  The voltage across the secondary coil is greater than the voltage across the primary coil  Found near power plants Step-down transformers  The voltage across the secondary coil is less than the voltage across the primary coil  Found near homes

Section 3 Quiz – Choose the word that best completes the sentence. 1.Electricity and magnetism are/are not part of a single force. 2.A transformer/generator can increase or decrease voltage. 3.An electric current can be produced in a circuit by a changing electric/magnetic field. 4.A transformer/generator uses electromagentic induction to convert mechanical energy to electrical energy.

Assignment:  Complete the Section 3 Review Questions: #1- 3 on page 582
