Processing ISC and Dry Ice in CampusShip

Packaging and Labeling Information Biological Substances and Dry Ice

Dry Ice Package Marking and Labeling Exterior of package per IATA: Mark Dry Ice or Carbon Dioxide, solid on package Mark the UN number (UN1845) on package Mark the Net weight of Dry Ice on the box (in Kg only) Class 9 diamond label is required Or, steps 1-4 can be consolidated on a special Class 9 sticker, displaying the same information UPS thermal address label. (No Shipper’s Declaration is required, as UPS thermal label meets IATA documentation requirements.)

Biological Substances Example of Packing and Marking for Category B At least one surface of the outer packaging must have a minimum dimension of 100 mm x 100 mm. The primary receptacle or the secondary packaging must be capable of withstanding, without leakage, an internal pressure producing a pressure differential of not less than 95 kPa. Itemized list of contents between secondary and outer packaging For Liquid substances: Primary receptacle must be leak-proof and must not contain more than 1 L; The secondary packaging must be leak-proof; If multiple fragile primary receptacles are placed in a single secondary packaging, they must be either individually wrapped or separated to prevent contact between them; Absorbent material must be placed between the primary receptacle and the secondary packaging and must be in sufficient quantity to absorb the entire contents of the primary receptacle The primary receptacle or the secondary packaging must be capable of withstanding without leakage an internal pressure of 95 kPa in the range of -40 degrees C to 55 degrees C. For Solid substances: Primary receptacle must be sift-proof and must not exceed the outer packaging weight limit; The secondary packaging must be sift-proof; Except for packages containing body parts, organs or whole bodies, the outer packaging must not contain more than 4 kg. This quantity excludes ice, dry ice or liquid nitrogen when used to keep specimens cold; If there is any doubt as to whether or not residual liquid may be present in the primary receptacle during transport then a packaging suitable for liquids, including absorbent materials, must be used. An itemized list of contents must be enclosed between the secondary packaging and the outer packaging If and Air Waybill is used, the “Nature and Quantity of Goods” box must show “UN 3373”, the text BIOLOGICAL SUBSTANCE, CATEGORY B” and the number of packages. Biological Substances, Category B Package Marking Information must include the name and telephone number of the responsible contact person Source: http://www.iata.org/whatwedo/cargo/dangerous_goods/Documents/Guidance_Doc62DGR_52.pdf

Exempt Animal Specimen Biological Substances Example of Packing and Marking for Exempt Specimens At least one surface of the outer packaging must have a minimum dimension of 100 mm x 100 mm. The outer packaging must be of adequate strength for its capacity, mass and intended use. Exempt Human Specimen Or Exempt Animal Specimen Source: http://www.iata.org/whatwedo/cargo/dangerous_goods/Documents/Guidance_Doc62DGR_52.pdf
