4 Definition – Overpacks
Paint UN12631 L Paint UN L Overpacks are special types of packaging which are used by a single consignor (shipper) to provide protection or convenience in handling a package or to consolidate two (2) or more packages. Examples of overpacks are one or more packages, Placed or stacked onto a pallet and secured by shrink wrap, strapping, stretch wrap, or other suitable means OR 171.8 (continued)

6 Gen. Pkg. Req. – Overpacks To be able to use an overpack for authorized packages containing hazardous materials, the following conditions must be met: 173.25(a)

7 Forbidden & Common Sense – Overpacks
The package meets the requirements of (Forbidden materials and Packages) and (General Requirements for Packagings & Packages (common sense)). 173.25(a)(1)

8 Marked and Labeled – Overpacks
The overpack is marked with the proper shipping name and Identification Number, when applicable, and is labeled for each hazardous material contained therein, unless marking and labels representative of each hazardous material in the overpack are visible. NOTE: All hazmat within the overpack must meet the segregation and separation requirements addressed in 49 CFR Paint UN L Paint UN12631 L Paint UN1263 1L Paint UN1263 1L 173.25(a)(2)

9 Orientation Arrows – Overpacks
Each non-bulk combination package having inner packagings containing liquid hazardous materials, single packaging fitted with vents, or open cryogenic receptacle intended for the transport of refrigerated liquefied gases must be packed in the overpack with its filling holes up and the overpack is marked with orientation arrows on two opposing vertical sides with the arrows pointing in the correct direction of orientation. 10 Specification Packaging – Overpacks
The overpack is marked with the word “OVERPACK” when specification packagings are required, unless specification markings on the inside packages are visible. NOTE: The word “OVERPACK” is not required if specification markings on the inside packages are visible through the overpack. 11 Corrosives & Oxidizers (PG I) – Overpacks
Corrosive materials (Class 8) in PG I or Oxidizing materials (Division 5.1) in PG I cannot be overpacked with any other materials. 173.25(a)(5)

12 Limited Quantities, ORM-D, & Excepted Quantities – Overpacks
The overpack is marked with the limited quantity marking as required in or the ORM-D marking as required in , unless a limited quantity or ORM-D marking representative of the hazardous material in the overpack is visible. The overpack is marked with the excepted quantities marking as required in 173.4a, unless visible. UN1760 173.25(a)(6) & (a)(7)

14 Example 2 – Overpacks Which of the following hazardous materials cannot be placed in an overpack with other materials? Hydrofluoric acid, 8 (6.1), UN1790, I Perchloric acid, 5.1 (8), UN1873, I Paint, 3, UN1263, I Hydrofluoric acid & Perchloric acid cannot be placed in an overpack with other materials because you cannot overpack Corrosive materials (Class 8) in PG I or Oxidizing materials (Division 5.1) in PG I with any other material besides themselves.

15 Ltd. Qty. & ORM-D – Overpacks
By meeting the inner packaging requirements for Limited Quantities or Consumer Commodities, shrink-wrapped or stretch-wrapped trays can be used as outer packaging, provided that: The inner packagings are not fragile, liable to break, or be easily punctured, such as those made of glass, porcelain, stoneware or certain plastics; and Each complete package does not exceed 20 kg (44 lbs) gross weight. 20 kg (44 lbs) 173.25(b)

16 Poisons & Foodstuffs – Overpacks
Hazmat labeled as POISON can be transported in the same motor vehicle with foodstuffs, feed, or any edible material intended for human or animal consumption provided: The hazmat is properly marked, labeled, and packaged; Complies with (a); and Is overpacked as specified in (e) or is in an overpack which is a UN 1A2, 1B2, or 1N2 drum tested and marked with a performance level for a Packing Group PG I (“X”) or PG II (“Y”). 173.25(c)
