"Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?..." Sonnet Short rhyming poem with 14 lines. Uses iambic meter in each line and line-ending rhymes. Invented in the 1200s-1300s Made popular by writers such as Shakespeare. "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?..."

Do not stand at my grave and weep by Mary Elizabeth Frye Do not stand at my grave and weep: I am not there; I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow, I am the sun on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning’s hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circling flight. I am the soft starshine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry: I am not there; I did not die.

There was an Old Man with a beard, Who said, "It is just as I feared There was an Old Man with a beard, Who said, "It is just as I feared! Two Owls and a Hen, Four Larks and a Wren, Have all built their nests in my beard!" —Edward Lear

The Snow Man  by Wallace Stevens One must have a mind of winter To regard the frost and the boughs Of the pine-trees crusted with snow; And have been cold a long time To behold the junipers shagged with ice, The spruces rough in the distant glitter Of the January sun; and not to think Of any misery in the sound of the wind, In the sound of a few leaves, Which is the sound of the land Full of the same wind That is blowing in the same bare place For the listener, who listens in the snow, And, nothing himself, beholds Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is.

Haiku An ancient Japanese poetry form Composed of three lines with specific numbers of syllables in each line Form: 1st Line: 5 syllables 2nd Line: 7 syllables 3rd Line: 5 syllables Often, traditional Haiku poetry has a seasonal reference
