Hawk Roosting L/O – to explore meaning, language and structure Hawk: create a mind map What are the behaviour habits of this bird of prey? What connotations do they have? Hughes – context Hawk Roosting is from the poems of the 1960s and was considered controversial as the symbol of a hawk on top of the world was linked to fascism with the Nazi symbol being an eagle standing on top of the wreath. What is fascism? A hawk is a bird of prey – it hunts and kills for food and survival. Hughes was hugely influenced by nature. The poem is a dramatic monologue? What effect does this have? What person is the poem written in? How many times is ‘I’ written in the poem? What does it suggest about the Hawk? Complete the worksheet activities about the poem. (next slide) Annotate the poem with your ideas.
