Making the Connection to Assessment

Three components: Common Core State Standards Excellent Matches to State Curriculum Essential Skills and Knowledge Developed by Maryland Educators for Maryland Educators Foundational work for Maryland curriculum resources

Provides language to help teachers develop common understandings and valuable insights into what a student must know and be able to do to demonstrate proficiency with each standard. The wording of some standards is so clear, however, that only partial support or no additional support seems necessary. It is NOT a checklist for instruction!

The PARCC Vision PARCC states have committed to building a K-12 assessment system that: Builds pathway to college and career readiness, Creates assessments that measure the full range of the Common Core State Standards, Supports educators in the classroom, Makes better use of technology Advances accountability.

The PARCC blueprint includes an ambitious timeline to develop and deploy new common assessments. States in the Partnership will see increasing levels of activity between now and fall 2014 when new assessments are fully launched.

School Year: Launch and design phase School Year: Development begins School Year: First year pilot/field testing and related research and data collection

School Year: Second year pilot/field testing and related research and data collection School Year: Full operational administration of PARCC assessments Summer 2015: Set achievement levels, including college-ready performance levels

Grades 3 – 8, and high school Content Frameworks for K – 2 is under development English Language Arts/Literacy, and Mathematics Voluntary resource Living resource – will be continuously refined

Bridge between Common Core Standards and the PARCC assessments Insight into Standards Implementation of Standards Inform development of item specifications and blueprints for PARCC assessments * From PARCC Content Framework document

Focus Opportunity for developing a deeper understanding of concepts, skills, and fluency Coherence Opportunity for students to see connections between and among standards

Designers of curricula, assessments, and professional development should all attend to the need to connect the mathematical practices to mathematical content in mathematics instruction* *PARCC Content Frameworks

Students must have the opportunity to work with tasks rich enough to elicit their content knowledge and their efficacy with standards of mathematical practice. Classroom instruction and assessment must provide a balance of content and practice.

Standards reflect importance of understanding, skill, and fluency Understanding will be assessed using short tasks and performance-based tasks Students will be expected to apply their understandings and skills to everyday problems Fluency means quickly and accurately

Key Advances from Previous Grade Fluency Expectations Major Within-Grade Dependencies Connections among standards, clusters, and domains Standards for In-Depth Focus Connecting Content and Practices Content Emphasis by Cluster

Grade 3 Math Content Framework Examining the PARCC Content Frameworks alongside the Maryland Common Core State Curriculum Frameworks will provide educators greater insight to instruction and assessment See Handouts

Designed to measure: Reading complex text Writing effectively when using and/analyzing sources Conducting and reporting on research Speaking and listening Language use

Close, analytic reading Comparison and synthesis of ideas, especially using multiple texts Essential when conducting research Important for struggling, on level, or advanced readers Texts should include content from across the disciplines; this will be accomplished differently depending on grade levels.

Improve reading comprehension and writing skills when writing in response to text Routine writing Rigorous, text-dependent questions Formal, structured analytic writing Write narratives that advance argument and explanation, as well as to develop skills through imaginative writing Research project

Cite evidence Analyze content Study and apply grammar Study and apply vocabulary Conduct discussions Report findings * In all modules

…each discipline acquires, develops and shares knowledge in distinct ways, educators in each field must take ownership of building robust instruction around discipline-specific literacy skills to prepare students for college and careers.* *PARCC Content Frameworks
