Southeastern Wisconsin Roofing & Waterproofing Crafts Joint Apprenticeship & Training Program

This program was started in 1999 Certified under the Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards Instruction provided through the Milwaukee Area Technical College

It stands ready to meet the needs for roofing construction apprentices who are becoming skilled in all phases of residential, commercial and industrial roofing and waterproofing installation.

What is the Roofing Apprenticeship Program ? 4 year Apprenticeship Requires 5,600 hours of on-the-job training 360 hours of classroom education 40 hours of related training

How are the 5,600 hours of on-the-job training performed? All Apprentices receive their training thru Journeyman on-the-job. Each job is manned with 2 journeyman for every 1 apprentice. Giving the apprentice sufficient guidance to learn the trade.

How is the 360 hours of classroom education taught? The 360 hours are broken down into 120 hour classes. One class taught each year. Built-Up I.First year class – Built-Up Single Ply II.Second year class –Single Ply Steep III.Third year class -Steep

Built-Up All phases of built-up roofing are taught by experienced journeyman roofers, that are accredited to teach at MATC. Class starts with safety – personal protection, fall hazards, proper use of safety line and guardrails, and dangers of burns from hot asphalt.

Built-Up OSHA Introduction Electrical Safety Fall Protection Personal Protection Equipment Cranes Excavation A 10 hour OSHA certified safety course is given for the following subjects.

Built-Up The proper use of hand and power equipment, along with the safe use, operating, maintaining, and trouble-shooting of the equipment.

Built-Up Different types of decks, roof features, and vapor barriers are taught. Insulations are covered, the purposes, R-value, storing, cutting, layering, and tapered.

Built-Up A strong emphasis is put on roofing materials. Here they learn ply line and exposures. Much of the course is spent on hands-on work, mopping and setting rolls of felt to the correct ply line with the correct amount of asphalt.

Built-Up Once competency is demonstrated, roofing details are added, edges, pipes, drains, scuppers, curbs, and flashing. The class continues with waterproofing, Maintenance, repair, and foreman introduction.

Single Ply Like the first year class, introduction time is spent on safety, equipment, insulations, and single ply materials. MSDS sheets are gone over thoroughly to cover solvents used in these systems

Single Ply Hands-on time is extensive, manufactures seminars are given in PVC and Rubber.

Single Ply The class continues with repairs and leak investigation. Modified Bitumen systems are also taught and foremen skills are re- enforced.

Steep Fall protection is covered heavily. Scaffolding erection is preformed in this class. Afterwards slopes and pitches, hoisting decks, ventilation are taught. Asphalt shingles are installed on mock-ups the apprentices build. All safety, estimating application, and measure backs are performed on the apprentices mock-ups and roofs constructed by MATC carpenters. A field trip is also done to apply these learned skill on a house or structure. The previous year a church house roof was done. This incorporates the estimating, job planning, leadership, detailing skills taught in school.

Steep Class continues with wood shingles and shake. The patterns, exposures, details, ventilation, board spacing, and felting for shakes are taught in hands-on demonstrations. Slate is also covered. The types, weight concerns, special tools, patterns, application, details, and repairs.

Steep Tile Finishes the course with types, layouts, loading, installation, details, and repairs. The types of tiles covered in this class are Spanish, interlocking, and concrete tiles.

What is the related training ? Are the subject pertaining to roofing that must be completed by the apprentice in order to receive journeymans status. OSHA 10* Small Engines Asbestos* Train the Trainer First Aid/CPR CERTA Torch Safety
