Where was the former Yugoslavia located? What happened to it in 1992? Firmer Yugoslavia is in the Balkan Peninsula. In 1992, it broke up due to rivalries among ethnicities that resurfaced in the 1980s after their long term leader Tito died. Breaking away to form independent countries were Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, and Slovenia. This caused an ethnic cleansing, where Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Serbs and Croats cleansed out the Bosnian Muslims. http://www.icty.org/sid/321
