2017 TUDA NAEP Results for Miami-Dade On April 10, 2018, the 2017 NAEP TUDA results were released. NAEP is considered the Nations Report Card and is the largest continuing evaluation of education in the United States The NAEP TUDA compares the results of district performance over time and with other districts. IN 2017, 27 districts participated. NAEP is the gold standard and allows us to examine the result s of M-DCPS in comparison to the nation, large cities and other urban districts. NAEP TUDA is administered every 2 years in grade 4 and 8 reading and mathematics. A-1

What is NAEP TUDA? NAEP — known as The Nation's Report Card — is the largest continuing, nationally representative evaluation of education in the United States. The NAEP Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA) results show how school districts are performing over time and compared with other participating districts ( 27 districts participated in 2017) NAEP is the gold standard and compares M-DCPS students’ performance to the Nation and other large urban districts. NAEP TUDA is administered in grades 4 and 8 in Reading and Mathematics every two years. Read slide

Highlights for Miami-Dade County NAEP TUDA Nationally, M-DCPS fourth graders ranked #1 in Reading #2 in Mathematics M-DCPS along with the other two Florida TUDA districts significantly outscored the nation, large city sample, and all other TUDA districts in both Reading and Mathematics, in Grade 4 Miami-Dade defied the national trends on the growing gap between the highest and lowest performing students Highlights of MDCPS’ performance include: Nationally, M-DCPS fourth graders ranked #1 in Reading #2 in Mathematics   M-DCPS along with the other two Florida TUDA districts significantly outscored the nation, large city sample, and all other TUDA districts in both Reading and Mathematics, in Grade 4 Miami-Dade defied the national trends on the growing gap between the highest and lowest performing students. While the lower performing students in the nation dropped in performance, Miami-Dade’s students improved

Grade 4   These grade 4 charts indicate how the performance trend line in Miami-Dade continues to improve since 2009 in both Reading and Mathematics

2017 NAEP Reading, Grade 4 MIAMI-DADE MIAMI-DADE Miami-Dade 4th graders were ranked #1 in Reading across all the other jurisdictions with a scale score of 229.

2017 NAEP Mathematics, Grade 4 MIAMI-DADE MIAMI-DADE Similarly, 4th graders were ranked #2 in Mathematics across all the other jurisdictions with a scale score of 245.

M-DCPS NAEP Subgroup Results Grade 4 M-DCPS' fourth grade students' scale scores exceeded the national public school and large city samples in both Reading and Mathematics in all subgroups   Overall White Black Hispanic Free/Reduced Lunch Students with Disabilities English Language Learners Reading Nation Large City Nation1 Large City Mathematics Further review of disaggregate data indicate the MDCPS’ 4th grade students’ scale scores exceeded the national public school and large city sample in all subgroups in both Reading and Mathematics. 1 M-DCPS scale score higher but not statistically significant.

Grade 8 These grade 8 charts indicate that although grade 8 reading scale score dropped, it still exceeded Large Cities and the grade 8 math held steady. There has been much discussion by the National Governing Board on the 8th grade mathematics results. It has been discussed that the grade 8 mathematics curriculum and expectations differ across states and districts. For example, in Florida, many grade 8 students enroll in high school Algebra as opposed to comprehensive grade 8 mathematics. Therefore, measuring such diverse standards is difficult.

2017 NAEP Reading, Grade 8 MIAMI-DADE MIAMI-DADE The Grade 8 reading scale score of 261 was above Large City and at par with other jurisdictions such as Boston and Jefferson County.

2017 NAEP Mathematics, Grade 8 MIAMI-DADE MIAMI-DADE The Grade 8 mathematics scale score of 274 matched that of Large City.

The Bottom Line NAEP is the gold standard and compares M-DCPS students’ performance to the Nation and other large urban districts In Grade 8, M-DCPS students outscored the large city sample in Reading and matched them in Mathematics Grade 4 M-DCPS students, overall and for all subgroups, scored higher than the national public school and large city samples in both Reading and Mathematics Nationally, M-DCPS fourth graders ranked #1 in Reading and #2 in Mathematics The bottom line ……

The Bottom Line In M-DCPS’s fifth year of participation in the national assessment, M-DCPS Hispanic students continue to shine, achieving higher Reading and Mathematics scale scores in all tested grade levels than both the national public school and large city samples Significant growth was seen in Reading and Mathematics scale scores for fourth grade students in the District from 2009 to 2017 M-DCPS was the only TUDA district to exhibit significant scale score growth from 2015 to 2017 in Grade 4 Mathematics
