Expectations “Oh, oh. Here comes another social worker.”

Group Work: Question #1 What are some common ethical delimmas you see in daily life? What are some ethical delimmas you have noted in the work place?

Ethics & Ethical Dilemmas It’s not always black and white.

Daily Encounters with Ethical Issues The clerk at the checkout counter gave you too much change: what do you do? Price tag on a piece of jewelry is less than actual price determined at cash register. Is the buyer obligated to make up the difference? Corporations have contracted to pay bonuses, but public is outraged when they do The same tax dollars cannot be spent on health care and hurricane recovery: how to decide?

What is an ethical dilemma? Ethical dilemmas always include two competing “goods.” Self determination: one of the “goods” and also an important social work value The competing “good” or value is__________________

Common Ethical Dilemmas Confidentiality and privileged communication Truth telling Paternalism and self-determination Laws, policies, and regulations Whistle-blowing Distributing limited resources (Reamer, F.G. (1987). Values and ethics. In Encyclopedia of Social Work, (18th ed.) pp. 801-809
