A catch all name for diverse “grassroots” reformers A response to excesses of the “Laissez-Faire Gilded Age” – promoted government involvement & regulation Mainly urban (not directly related to farmers/Populists) Middle class women play a key role – “Social Housekeeping” Promoted scientific investigation – “Pragmatism” Often motivated by religion – “Social Gospel” Promoted reform ideas through popular press – “Muckrakers”
