Kingdom Righteousness Matthew 5:21-48

Gods Impossible Standard 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5)

The Righteousness Of The Pharisees & The Teachers Of The Law Legalistic Righteousness Kingdom Righteousness

17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5) Jesus And The Law

You Have Heard That It Was Said The first two are out of the Ten Commandments. There is no dispute that these are the things that the Law clearly teaches, but as you progress through these examples, you will find that by the time you reach the end of the section in Matthew 5:34-48, we do not find a clear Old Testament command. Instead Jesus cites an inference drawn from the Law by the Pharisees. They infer that the Law says you should love your neighbour and hate your enemy. You wont find that in any verse in the Old Testament (or the New) because it is an inference that has been improperly drawn. Jesus begins with the Law straight out, and he ends with the Law as it has been torqued and twisted by the scribes and the Pharisees. (Bob Deffinbaugh, Avoiding The Sin of Adultery)

You Have Heard That It Was Said 1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They dont wash their hands before they eat! 3 Jesus replied, And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, Honour your father and mother and Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death. 5 But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is a gift devoted to God, 6 he is not to honour his father with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. (Matthew 15)

But I Tell You Radical Authority True Interpretation

But I Tell You Original Meaning Of The Law What was implicit in the Old Testament Law, Jesus is making explicit. He is giving insight into the original purpose of Gods Law, a purpose that had been lost among the teachers of His day. Jesus is saying, Im going to the very heart of the Law to show you how you can live out its deepest meaning. (Keith Krell, Stop The Killing Spree)

But I Tell You Comprehensive Nature Of The Law He (Jesus) means, Listen carefully. We are going to deal with the entire person. We are going to look not only at observable actions, but at the motives behind the actions. We are going to look at the heart of the person that is always displayed before God, about which we have no ability to fudge or pretend or manipulate. Jesus insists that God cares about our motives and our hearts. (Steve Zeisler, The Heart of The Matter)

The Letter And Spirit Of The Law

Woe To You 23 Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices – mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law – justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. (Matthew 23)

The More Important Matters Of The Law 21 You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment. 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, Raca, is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, You fool! will be in danger of the fire of hell. 23 Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift. 25 Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26 I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny. 27 You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery. 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. (Matthew 5)

Internal Before External Fruit of SinRoot of Sin Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. 4 And Abel also brought an offeringfat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. 6 Then the Lord said to Cain, Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it. 8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, Lets go out to the field. While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. (Genesis 4)

Internal Before External 25 Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self- indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. (Matthew 23) 23 Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. (Proverbs 4)

The More Important Matters Of The Law 31 It has been said, Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce. 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery. 33 Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord. 34 But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is Gods throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 Simply let your Yes be Yes, and your No, No; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. (Matthew 5)

Character Before Conduct It has been said, Oaths arise because men are so often liars. We live in a world where lying is so commonplace that we dont know whom to trust. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we ought to be radically different. True speech must be part of our character. We should not need to confirm our statements with an appeal to a higher authority. Our word should be enough (cf. James 5:2). The bottom line is this: We dont tell the truth because we have taken an oath, we tell the truth because we are truthful. (Keith Krell, Keep Your Promises)

The More Important Matters Of The Law 38 You have heard that it was said, Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth. 39 But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40 And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. 41 If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. 43 You have heard that it was said, Love your neighbour and hate your enemy. 44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5)

Relationships Before Rules 38 You have heard that it was said, Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth. 39 But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. (Matthew 5)

Relationships Before Rules 43 You have heard that it was said, Love your neighbour and hate your enemy. 44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5)

35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? 37 Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. (Matthew 22)

The Message Of The Sermon On The Mount 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5)

For years I thought of the Sermon on the Mount as a blueprint for human behavior that no one could possibly follow. Reading it again, I found that Jesus gave these words not to cumber us, but to tell us what God is like. The character of God is the urtext of the Sermon on the Mount. Why should we love our enemies? Because our clement Father causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good. Why be perfect? Because God is perfect. Why store up treasures in heaven? Because the Father lives there and will lavishly reward us. Why live without fear and worry? Because the same God who clothes the lilies and the grass of the field has promised to take care of us. Why pray? If an earthly father gives his son bread or fish, how much more will the Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him. (Philip Yancey, The Jesus I Never Knew, p )
