The Sermon on the Mount Lesson 6
Matthew 5:27-36

Matthew 5:27-36 " You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not commit adultery. ' But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

Matthew 5:27-36 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell." Furthermore it has been said, ' Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce. ' But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.

Matthew 5:27-36 " Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord. ' But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God's throne; nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your " Yes ' be ' Yes, ' and your ' No, ' ' No. ' For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.

The old & new way " You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not commit adultery. ' But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. – Matthew 5:27-28

The old & new way Of old – “you shall not commit adultery” a. A person was commanded not to commit adultery. b. Adultery defined - have unlawful intercourse with another's wife (Strong’s #g3431)

The old & new way New way – “whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” a. Christ says person is guilty of adultery in their heart after lusting for another person. b. Again, Christ addresses the fuel that causes a person to sin.

How to avoid the sin If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. Matthew 5:29-30

How to avoid the sin What causes you to sin? “If your right eyes causes you to sin…” Whatever causes you to sin, avoid it. “cast it from you”

Adultery & marriage " Furthermore it has been said, ' Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce. ' But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery. Matthew 5:31-32

Adultery & marriage Marriage binds two people together

Adultery & marriage For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, 8 and the two shall become one flesh '; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh. Mark 10:7-8

Adultery & marriage Marriage binds two people together (Mark 10:7-8) Why does God want us to avoid adultery? It can destroy a marriage (v.32)

Do not swear falsely – Matthew 5:33-37
Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.

Do not swear falsely Performing your oaths to God is figurative of obedience. No grey area for performing oaths. Obedience is a yes or no. In our daily life our oaths and promises should be held in place by simple yes or no as well.

Application for today Lust & Adultery Lust and Adultery many times go hand in hand-but not always. To avoid such sin a person must avoid what often fuels the situation.

Application for today Performing oaths A person who doesn’t perform their oaths is displeasing in the sight of God. On earth a person who doesn’t perform their oaths is untrustworthy.

What about you? If you have a problem in these areas you need to make a change. Without change sin remains. Do you need to make a change?
